Fighting disinformation in the Czech Republic and Germany.
Čevela, Tomáš ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Lizcová, Zuzana (referee)
The presented work deals with the struggle of the Czech Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany with disinformation. It arises against the background of a conventional war conflict, the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation. At the same time, the Russian Federation is using the information space to expand its influence in Europe as part of the hybrid war. The work compares the means and procedure of both states in combating disinformation, specifically compares the legislative framework of both states, their institutions and their international cooperation. The work came to the conclusion that in many aspects the Czech Republic lags behind Germany. Although both states have a similar approach in establishing or empowering state institutions to combat disinformation and in international cooperation. However, unlike Germany, the Czech Republic does not yet have effective legislation to combat disinformation and does not invest funds in civic education and research projects.
Solidarity Surcharge in Germany
Le, Le Phuong ; Nigrin, Tomáš (advisor) ; Šmidrkal, Václav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the solidarity surcharge in Germany. The surcharge was first introduced in 1991 in order to finance the costs of the German reunification and to bridge the gap between states of western and eastern Germany. The surcharge was originally intended to be temporary for one year only, however, due to higher fiscal costs the solidarity surcharge was reintroduced in 1995. It was compulsory for all taxpayers until the end of 2020. The aim of this bachelor thesis is to explain why the solidarity surcharge was abolished right at the beginning of 2021. To answer this question, two initial hypotheses have been defined. First, the states of eastern Germany have reached the same economic level as the western ones. In this part of the research, the thesis discusses mainly the financial strength of the states, which is demonstrated by the example of the equalisation payments. Second, the national economic situation of the Federal Republic of Germany made it possible to abolish the solidarity surcharge without negatively affecting public finances. To verify this theory, the German state budgets are examined and then confronted with the revenue from the solidarity surcharge. Furthermore, the thesis also covers the public debate on the introduction and subsequent abolition of the...
The Czech-German Military-Security Cooperation vs. the Arising Strategic Culture of the Czech Republic
Stojanovová, Kamila ; Handl, Vladimír (advisor) ; Dvořák, Pavel (referee)
This bachelor thesis depicts the Czech-German military-security cooperation in context of the security cultures of both countries. It focuses on the specific German strategic culture, however, the process of emerging strategic culture in the case of Czech Republic as a possible limiting factor for the military cooperation with Germany has also been pointed out. The theoretical base of this work are the concepts of political- military culture from Thomas U. Berger and strategic culture from Kerry Longhurst. The key criteria for the compatibility-analysis of both strategic cultures are the historical experience with the use of military force, the attitudes to army and use of force across the political elite, in the public opinion and in strategic papers, and the legitimation process of military missions. According to this, the aim of the work is to find the reason why in the period prior to the accession of Czech Republic to NATO the cooperation in the political and practical spheres didn't take place in the same intensity. At the same time, it tries to find the reason why the participation of the Czech Army in PRT Faizabad has been the only significant moment in the military cooperation with Germany after the NATO-accession in 1999. However, this work doesn't leave out the recent development, which...

Papežová, Kateřina ; Dimitrov, Michal (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
The thesis "The Olympic Games in Munich as a Venue for the Political Rivalry between the FRG and the GDR" deals with the use of sport for political purposes by the two German states on the specific example of the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972. These Olympic games were a breakthrough for both countries. For the FRG as a host country, they created an opportunity to show the world, a new and modern Germany. The first part of the thesis is focused on the development of German-German rivalry in the Olympics. The next chapter describes the Olympic games in Munich and also answers the question; what the two German states wanted to achieve, how they wanted to achieve their goals and which one of the German states was more succesful in overall rivalry through the use of the games. Attention is also paid to the influence on political rivalry between the two states of the Palestinian assassination at the games. The conclusions of the thesis are supported by the analysis of the response of the political rivalry of the GDR and the FRG at the Munich Olympics in print media. With a focus specifically on the East German newspaper- Neues Deutschland and West German newspaper-...

"The last Bridge" - The United German Olympic Teams in the East And West German Press 1956-1964
Pust-Petters, Anna Celine ; Roubal, Petr (advisor) ; Emler, David (referee)
The purpose of the thesis is to explore how the negotiations about the United German Olympic Teams (1956-1964) were represented in the West and East German press, specifically in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung (FRG) and Neues Deutschland (GDR). The United German Olympic Teams were the last bridge connecting the two Germanys, continuing to exist even after the construction of the Berlin wall. The thesis is based on the assumption that sport played an important role in the construction of post- war German identities. Moreover, it will be argued that the two German states relied heavily on ideological demarcation from the respective "other" for legitimization. Thus, the thesis will argue that the discourses about the constitution of the team reflect on questions of identity, unity, and division. In order achieve this, Fairclough's method of Critical Discourse Analysis will be used to examine ideological and symbolic content in the discourses on the negotiations between the two National Olympic Committees.
